Frequently Asked Questions
Where are your In-Person classes located?
In our beautifully renovated new home in Keller, TX, off of Creek Rd. Our neighborhood is close to Southlake, Colleyville, North Richland Hills, and HEB. Do we have pets? While my home is regularly cleaned & furniture/rugs will be vacuumed before classes, we do have cats that are part of our family.
How will students complete homework?
I will provide a detailed assignment calendar for students through Google Docs, which will itemize weekly readings & any writing assignment or exercise they should complete throughout the week. High School students should expect to read 90 to 140 pages a week, Middle School students 70 to 100 pages. Writing assignments will be completed, shared, and reviewed via Google Docs & the learning management system, Google Classroom.
Will there be tests?
No. Grades are based on the quality of student participation (which includes regular attendance), completion of notebook responses, and graded writing assignments & projects.
Is there a Storyweaver AI Policy?
Yes! Storyweaver AI Policy: While Storyweaver students may use AI as a tool for performing grammar checks and genuine research (not idea generation), they are NOT permitted to use AI to create original content that fulfills a course assignment or to form interpretations of a text. This includes the following: summary/analysis/interpretation of a course text, Socratic seminar questions, Writer’s Notebook responses, paper outlines, paper drafting/writing, and creative projects. If a Storyweaver student is found to be creating/submitting work through the use of AI, claiming it as original content, they will be placed on academic probation or possibly asked to leave the class.
Do you have an Honor Code?
Every student will sign the following Honor Code at the beginning of the year: “I pledge to do justice to my literary community and to myself. I pledge to respect the trust invested in me as a Storyweaver student, acknowledging that my choices now lay the foundation for a life-long commitment to integrity. When I turn in any assignment or assessment, I am claiming the work as my own. As a Storyweaver student, I commit to consulting the teacher if I need help or am confused about my limitations for a particular assignment. I understand that deceiving, plagiarizing, allowing AI to do my work, or cheating in any other form undermines my strength of character and intellectual growth.”
What are the requirements for a completion certificate?
Respectful, regular attendance and adequate, timely completion of all writing assignments and projects.
Is this a Christian Curriculum?
C.S. Lewis explains in An Experiment in Criticism (his book about how to be a good reader) that we must approach literature on its own terms: “The first demand any work of art makes upon us is surrender. Look. Listen. Receive. Get yourself out of the way.” As a teacher and guide, my goal is to model this approach, so students can grow in humility and wisdom as they learn to see the truth, beauty, and goodness in great books. Many of the works we study together are deeply influenced by the Bible and by Christian theology, and to read them well, we must explore themes/images/symbols that are indeed Christian. Personally, I have found that becoming a good student of the Bible has made me a better reader of the great books. I do not teach through a specific worldview; I simply strive to teach how to read well. My undergraduate minor is in Biblical Studies from a Christian university, and my Christian faith is integral to my life. Yet all are welcome in my classes!
